World Cup
On June 3, 2003, the Confederation of South American Football (CONMEBOL)announced that Argentina, Brazil and Colombia have applied to host the event. OnMarch 17, 2006, the confederations of CONMEBOL voted unanimously for theregistration of Brazil as sole candidate.
FIFA President Sepp Blatter said on July 4, 2006, in that case, the 2014 World Cupwould probably be based in the country. On 28 September the same year, he met with then President Lula and said he wanted the country to prove their ability before making a decision. The February 7, 2007 would be the final date for entries, but anticipated theFIFA deadline and this ended in December 18, 2006. On the last day for entries,Colombia also offered to host the 2014 World Cup, but Sepp Blatter did not supportthe candidacy of the country, and so eventually gave up Colombia to host the event. OnOctober 30, 2007 FIFA ratified Brazil as the venue for the World Cup in 2014. The choice of host cities was the end of 2008, but ended up going on May 31, 2009 in the Bahamas.
