Some of the popular music genre originating in Brazil are the popular Choro, Samba, Bossa Nova and popular Brazillian Song. How can we highlight whinersPixinguinha, Jacob's Mandolin, and Waldir Azevedo Altamiro Carrilho. Examples ofsamba are Cartola and Noel Rosa. Maestro Tom Jobim, the poet Vinicius de Moraesand Joao Gilberto, on the other hand, are familiar names associated with bossa novaand whose work has international repercussions, were recorded by the likes ofFrank Sinatra and Stan Getz. After the Bossa Nova, the movement known astropicalia also had a prominent role as a vanguard and experimental music.
But Brazil also had an important role in the classical tradition. It is considered that thefirst great Brazilian composer José Maurício Nunes Garcia was a contemporary ofMozart and Beethoven. Carlos Gomes, author of the opera O Guarani, from the novelby José de Alencar's, was the first Brazilian composer to haveinternational exposure. In the twentieth century stands out the work of HeitorVilla-Lobos, responsible for the assimilation on the part of classical music, variouselements of popular culture, like certain guitars and rhythms. Other important composers in the line of classical music are Guerra Peixe, Claudio Santoro andCamargo Guarnieri. At present, the highlights are works by contemporary composerslike Amaral Vieira, Osvaldo Lacerda and Edino Krieger.
